High Speed Wahoo Trolling Charters In Boca Raton With Captain Chris Agardy

High Speed Wahoo Trolling Charters In Boca Raton With Captain Chris Agardy

High Speed trolling for wahoo is one of the most exciting offshore fisheries along our Southeast Florida coastline. Our fertile offshore reef system is teeming with baitfish that attract hungry wahoo to feed within 2 miles of the beach. We target these wahoo by trolling with atificial lures and natural baits at speeds of 8 to 20 mph. When a wahoo eats one of our trolling baits, it usually makes a smoking fast run in the opposite direction for up to 200 yards. The bigger the wahoo, the bigger the initial run it makes. We use wire leader when we target wahoo because they have scissor-like jaws with hundreds of razor sharp teeth that can cut through regular monofilament fishing line like butter. Wahoo fishing charters in Boca Raton are not for everyone, mostly due to the fact that we might have to wait for hours in between bites. Even when the high speed trolling for wahoo is slow, we might catch other species like mahi mahi, sailfish, and tuna in the same areas where the ‘hoos are feeding.

South Florida Wahoo Charters
40 Lb wahoo caught while high speed trolling on New Years Eve 2014.

A typical 4 hour high speed trolling charter for wahoo includes three and a half hours of fishing and one half hour total of run time. The wahoo fishing grounds are very close to Boca Raton Inlet  and Boynton Inlet, so we start trolling for them within 15 minutes of leaving the dock. When we are trolling for wahoo, we use 50-80lb class conventional rods and reels with bent butts that are locked into the rod holders. These bent butts keep the rods at an angle closer to the water to keep trolling leads tracking under the water. When a wahoo bites, the angler reels in the fish by constantly cranking on the reel handle while the rod is in the holder. We keep the boat moving forward to keep a steady angle of the line to the hooked wahoo. When we get the trolling lead up to the boat, the first mate hand lines the rest of the leader until the wahoo is in gaff range. There is no better feeling than when the wahoo is gaffed and comes over the rail. This excitement is why we love running High Speed wahoo fishing charters in Boca Raton! The Fishing Continues to Explode off Boca Raton!

Boca Raton Fishing Charters Wahoo Live Bait
This wahoo was taken on one of our Boca Raton fishing charters on Saturday. We hooked into the 40 lb + wahoo while looking for dolphin way offshore! It was the biggest full moon of the year, and we believe that this had something to do with this rare encounter with a large offshore wahoo.

Offshore Fishing Report and Forecast: This past week has seen it’s share of ups and downs for fishermen around Palm Beach County as our weather pattern continues to fluctuate before settling into a consistent Summer pattern. One thing is for sure, when the seas have been calm, the offshore fishing has been unbelievable at times! We are seeing lots of big king mackerel in the 30-50 lb range eating live baits and dead sardines while we drift along the outer edges of the reefs while on our Boca Raton fishing charters. These kingfish will continue to bite ravenously as our smoker king season peaks this month.

This is a still frame from the video of the wahoo from the pic above!

Blackfin tuna fishing is outstanding as well. Last Saturday we caught 4 blackfin tunas that weighed over 20 lbs each to win the Royal Palm Yacht Club tournament in Boca Raton! The secret to catching these monster blackfin tunas this time of year is to have feisty live baits. Our live bait supply is always being replenished for this reason! Kite fishing is an exciting way to fish live baits this time of the year for the big kingfish and blackfin tunas, but the occasional wahoo, mahi mahi, sailfish, or cobia are all prospective targets under the kites while on one of our Boca Raton fishing charters. Mutton snapper, mangrove snapper, yellowtail snapper, and  amberjack will be readily hitting our deep baits as we drift along the reefs of Boca Raton this time of year as well. The best part about fishing in May is the sheer combination of quality sportfish that you may encounter while on one of our Boca Raton fishing charters.

Inshore Fishing Report and Forecast: The inshore fishing is really starting to get good as boat traffic lessens with the end of the tourist season. This allows us to fish our favorite intracoastal fishing holes without being interrupted by extensive boat traffic while on one of our Boca Raton fishing charters.

Snook are the best bet this month while inshore fishing around Boca Raton.

Having said this, it is also a good idea to book an inshore trip with us during the weekdays, as the weekends will still be tough with the year round resident weekend warriors! Anyways, snook fishing tops the list for inshore waters right now. The warming waters trigger a massive migration of snook into the inlets during the month of May, and Boca Raton Inlet is known as one of the best spots to catch monster snook this time of year. The snook show up with the arrival of massive schools of pilchards, spanish sardines, and threadfin herring into Boca Inlet. We like to fish light spinning tackle for these snook, which can reach 40 lbs this time of year! Tarpon and Permit fishing will heat up along the beaches while on one of our Boca Raton fishing charters. We like to use crabs for bait for both species this time of year.
