Winter/ Spring 2019 Delray Beach Fishing Forecast

Delray Beach Fishing Charters
A nice pair of snook for these happy customers!

It is an exciting time of year for fishermen down here in South Florida. There has been no shortage of trophy catches during our recent fishing charters in the Boca Raton, Delray Beach, and Boynton Beach areas. The best bet during deep sea fishing trips has been targeting sailfish with live baits or trolling for wahoo. This is typically the case this time of year as cold fronts trigger baitfish migrations through our area. As long as the cold fronts keep moving through, we will continue to catch these two prized gamefish in offshore waters during our fishing charters. When the ocean is too rough to get out deep sea fishing, we have been having lots of action on light tackle spinning rods during our inshore trips.

Boca Raton Fishing Charters
Nice wahoo caught on the last full moon during a deep sea fishing trip.

The best inshore fishing has been live baiting for snook during higher tides or casting and trolling swimming plugs for bluefish and jacks. Other interesting species we have been catching around Delray Beach and Boynton Beach have been Southern Sennet, barracuda, and the occasional tarpon. The water temps are pushing 70 degrees, which means we are settled in nicely to our Winter/early Spring fishing patterns. Expect the kingfish, wahoo, snook, and tarpon action to remain steady over the next month or two until water temps increase and new species start to show up.

A great catch for this father/son duo!

02/16/16 Fishing Report: Wahoo Bite Goes Off!

Photo Feb 16, 9 04 00 PMPhoto Feb 16, 9 02 47 AMThis morning we had an offshore fishing charter on the 42′ Hatteras with a 2 anglers from Buffalo, NY. After waiting for an intense pre-frontal storm to pass, we left the dock at 8:00 am and we had our lines in the water trolling in blue water by 8:15 am. Within 5 minutes of trolling we were hooked up to a triple header hookup of wahoo about 1 mile outside Boynton Beach Inlet. Each of the fish quickly took out about 100 yards of line, and unfortunately two of the fish came unhooked. We did keep one on the line, however, and within ten minutes our angler had a 21lb wahoo boatside and we gaffed him and put him in the box. We reset our lines and made a circle back to the same area and immediately hooked up to another wahoo on one of our weighted lines. The wahoo stayed hooked and within 5 minutes we had a 33 lb wahoo boatside, gaffed, and in the box. Photo Feb 16, 8 41 31 AMOnce again we turned to circle back to the same spot and hooked up again on the deep rod, this time landing a 15 lb wahoo. We turned back and went through the same area a few more times, but as wahoo often do, they stopped biting by 9am. Our anglers were very happy catching 3 wahoo out of 5 hooked, but their arms were already tired from cranking on heavy conventional tackle so they wanted to switch gears to a little light tackle bottom fishing. We moved into the reef about 1/2 mile from shore and made about 20 drops, catching a variety of bottom fish including hogfish, porgies, pork fish, red grouper, sand eels, parrot fish, and file fish. We headed back to the dock around noon after a successful morning half day charter. I expect good wahoo fishing to continue during the next week as the full moon approaches. High Speed Wahoo Trolling Charters In Boca Raton With Captain Chris Agardy

High Speed Wahoo Trolling Charters In Boca Raton With Captain Chris Agardy

High Speed trolling for wahoo is one of the most exciting offshore fisheries along our Southeast Florida coastline. Our fertile offshore reef system is teeming with baitfish that attract hungry wahoo to feed within 2 miles of the beach. We target these wahoo by trolling with atificial lures and natural baits at speeds of 8 to 20 mph. When a wahoo eats one of our trolling baits, it usually makes a smoking fast run in the opposite direction for up to 200 yards. The bigger the wahoo, the bigger the initial run it makes. We use wire leader when we target wahoo because they have scissor-like jaws with hundreds of razor sharp teeth that can cut through regular monofilament fishing line like butter. Wahoo fishing charters in Boca Raton are not for everyone, mostly due to the fact that we might have to wait for hours in between bites. Even when the high speed trolling for wahoo is slow, we might catch other species like mahi mahi, sailfish, and tuna in the same areas where the ‘hoos are feeding.

South Florida Wahoo Charters
40 Lb wahoo caught while high speed trolling on New Years Eve 2014.

A typical 4 hour high speed trolling charter for wahoo includes three and a half hours of fishing and one half hour total of run time. The wahoo fishing grounds are very close to Boca Raton Inlet  and Boynton Inlet, so we start trolling for them within 15 minutes of leaving the dock. When we are trolling for wahoo, we use 50-80lb class conventional rods and reels with bent butts that are locked into the rod holders. These bent butts keep the rods at an angle closer to the water to keep trolling leads tracking under the water. When a wahoo bites, the angler reels in the fish by constantly cranking on the reel handle while the rod is in the holder. We keep the boat moving forward to keep a steady angle of the line to the hooked wahoo. When we get the trolling lead up to the boat, the first mate hand lines the rest of the leader until the wahoo is in gaff range. There is no better feeling than when the wahoo is gaffed and comes over the rail. This excitement is why we love running High Speed wahoo fishing charters in Boca Raton!
